Maybe The Should Have Called It “?@$%%#+” Tape
A recent article in the New York Times speculates that the original name for the transparent tape we call Scotch tape, was originally intended as a slur, since in the 1920’s “Scotch” was used as a synonym for “cheap”.
The term was apparently applied by a painter who found that the tape didn’t have enough adhesive and asked the developers “Why so Scotch with the adhesive?”.
